In Camden, the elementary school teacher, Poppy Cross, is a very optimistic thirty year-old smiler that has been sharing a flat with her friend and co-teacher, Zoe, for ten years. When her bicycle is stolen, Poppy decides to have driving lessons with the Axle School of Motoring with the rude, bigoted and bitter instructor, Scott. Meanwhile she has trouble with her back after having a go on the trampoline and decides instead to take Flamenco classes with a Spanish teacher. When her pupil, Nick, bullies other students, Poppy feels that the boy is having troubles at home. She asks for the assistance of the social worker, Tim, and they start to date each other. However her attitude of happiness and joy is misinterpreted by Scott.

I loved this film, I enjoyed the historical details which seemed to go beyond the typical holliwood steriotypes; the views of the villages, the haystacks, the plowing, the dogs and the mice. I enjoyed the battle scenes which felt convincing, That's how medieval battle scenes might have been.. struggling with buckets of boiling oil on the parapets, all a bit messy and chaotic. The way that it was filmed I felt that I was there. The ships moving along the Thames towards the tower of London; I've often wondered how that would have looked, and now that image will stay with me.
Russel Crowe's performance was subtle and didn't distact from the story. Cate Blanchette was fine. What a relief to see actors getting muddy, playing their part without looking like they've just come off the catwalk.
The kings were human. The king of france and of england were equally feeble. I know that historically Elinor d'Aquitaine was in france when Richard died, and of course other historical facts were inacurate, but I felt that this film made an effort to be true to the sentiments of the 13th century. A world was created within the film. It wasn't just another world copied from other films.
I gather that there is talk of a sequel, personally I hope it doesn't happen, I hope that all of the artists involved can go off and get involved in something totally different and equally original.
